My laboratory research is focused on understanding normal and abnormal basal ganglia physiology. Presently, we are using a rodent model of kernicterus (hyperbilirubinemia) to study the neuronal correlates of dystonia. We are interesting in understanding how phasic changes in neuronal activity (or the order of milliseconds) in basal ganglia and thalamic nuclei contribute to normal and abnormal movements.

As part of our movement disorders programs at VCU and the Parkinson's Disease Research, Education, and Clinic Center (PADRECC) at the McGuire VAMC, we have a number of ongoing research projects.  One of these projects, which complements are laboratory studies, involves studying EMG patterns and neuronal activity in patients undergoing deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery.  In collaboration with the department of biomedical engineering, we are investigating eye movement control problems in those with Parkinson's disease (PD)and other movement disorders.  We are determining the utility of eye movement screening for early diagnosis of PD and other movement disorders and are investigating potential therapeutic approaches to these eye movement problems.  Other studies involve using postural stabilitiy assessments to improve balance.
