The Department of Neurology offers a one-year Vascular Neurology Fellowship approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This comprehensive program provides training in the inpatient and outpatient management of cerebrovascular disorders under the supervision of internationally renowned faculty with a variety of expertise.

Training takes place at VCU Medical Center, Virginia’s first certified Comprehensive Stroke Center. An average of 1,000 stroke patients are seen each year, including those with ischemic stroke, TIA, intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and other cerebrovascular disorders. Management includes TNK, thrombectomy, and other interventions related to ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage including hemicraniectomy. Clinical experience includes Neurology Inpatient Stroke Service, Neurology Stroke Alert/Consult Service, Neuroscience ICU, Neurology Outpatient Stroke Clinic, Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation including the Sheltering Arms Institute in collaboration with VCU.

Strengths of the program include extensive training in stroke neuroimaging, neurocritical care, acute stroke evaluation, assessment for stroke intervention and outpatient stroke prevention, and the recent addition of transcranial doppler training on site. Fellows also have the opportunity to serve as investigators in ongoing clinical research trials, both NIH and industry-sponsored. Fellows also participate in the care of pediatric stroke patients through the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU.

Completion of the Vascular Neurology Fellowship prepares the candidate for an academic career, and courses in research methodology can be incorporated into the curriculum for those interested.
