The VCU Department of Neurology welcomes Sandra Dewar, PhD, RN, FAES, FAAN who joined us on March 15, 2022 as assistant professor in neurology and the epilepsy program manager.
Dr. Dewar comes to us from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Seizure Disorder Center. She received her PhD from the School of Nursing, UCLA and is a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Future of Nursing Scholar.
She is a recognized expert in the care of people with epilepsy and seizure disorders. Her extensive clinical experience and research activities serve to impact practice standards, as well as the training and mentorship of nurses across treatment settings and levels of specialization in the USA and globally.
Dr. Dewar’s scholarly contributions include many international collaborations that address key professional practice issues in epilepsy. Her publications encompass a body of qualitative research that has generated theory around perceptions of illness severity and treatment decision-making. This work substantiates her deep understanding of the challenges of epilepsy care for providers, patients, and families.
Dr. Dewar has served in leadership roles on the Professional Advisory Board of the Epilepsy Foundation of America, many committees and work groups of the American Epilepsy Society (AES), and the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE).
